Wild life garden spring update

From garden to kitchen
From garden to kitchen

The children have been working through the winter to prepare the ground and lay the pond liner.  At last it seems to be retaining water and we can start to plant out some wetland grasses and pond plants.  We have planted out beans, peas, carrots, parsnips and early salad plants in the market garden and flowers in the science plot.
Our ongoing project at the moment is creating a bug hotel out of waste pipes and tubes filled with straw, soil, straw or papaer and card waste.  We hope to encourage bugs so that we can observe them through magnifying glasses in their homes.
We have been working with the Yorkshire Water  '  One million green fingers' project and they will begin work on an outside classroom in the wildlife garedn in June.

Please feel free to call in on Thursday evenings between 3.00 and 4.00 pm. to see the progress.

Yours Mrs Roberts and the Garden crew.

Market gardens

We have two raised beds and this year we have produced potatoes, carrots, beetroot, spring onions, radishes, salad leaves, beans and sunflowers.

The children have had great fun planting and harvesting as well as learning about where their food comes from.  We intend to improve and extend this project so that more children can get involved.  We hope to sell our produce so that we can pay for next years seeds and create more beds.

Wildlife garden

We wanted to create a science base that will sustain wildlife. This is a small area of land that could be used by all members of the school community for both leisure and study.  It will contain a dry area and bog land, paths and seating, trees, grasses and hedgerow.  The aim is to encourage birds, butterflies, insects, frogs, newts etc.  Logs and stones should be available to look under and sit upon.  This is not a play area but a quiet creeping, looking and being amazed area.

Please regularly log on to this page to find updates on our progress

We are supported by lots of people from the Royal Horticultural Society for advice to Boyes who have supplied some of our tools.

But the most important people are the children and you, the parents and family.

We cannot do this without your support so if you see a moment when you could join us to do a bit of work or offer some advice please come along and help.

19th October we held a Grown ups Growing day.

We had a fantastic response. If you missed it please come and see us after school on Thursday for our gardening club.

KS2 Garden club if after school 3.00 - 4.00pm each Thursday
KS! Garden club is 12.30 – 12.55 each Wednesday
Mrs Roberts is available each Wednesday afternoon just call in at the office and they will tell you where to find us.

We have heard about lots of exciting projects going on in other schools, like a greenhouse made from cola bottles, so any ecological ideas please share them with us.
